Building a Future for your Employees

The world we live in is evolving quickly and in every possible aspect. With the increasing spread of technology, the ways in which people work and their thinking processes are changing at a significant rate. As the world is moving towards artificial intelligence and the robotic age, things like roll tops being introduced had made it necessary for employees to learn new skills and develop to secure their place in the industry.

The first step towards this would be to teach the employees how to learn. This mindset can be created by fostering a culture of learning and development so they can face every obstacle that comes their way in the future. Employers should start off by getting rid of static training and promote constant learning through which employees are made aware of their weaknesses and work towards improving them.

A learning culture from top to bottom

Juniors follow seniors. Something we all observe in our daily lives. The same principle works in offices too. Seniors are a role model for their junior employees. Thus, learning should start off with the senior management and then flow downwards. Once employees see their leaders working on it too, they will be more motivated to do the same. Leaders can also act as mentors and guides for their junior employee, creating a more corporative environment.

Inside out development

Apart from relying on external expertise for training and development, employers should look for expertise on the inside. Different employees possess different skills and expertise, whether related to the job or not. Employers should create an atmosphere where everyone learns something from every other person in the workplace. This way a continuous system of learning will be created and a highly diversified skilled team will be available.

Curriculum

Obtaining perfect information is a difficult task. The quality of information matters. This can be done either by developing a learning management system, though this may be costly for organisations, but will surely be beneficial in the long run or by promoting learning through online lectures such as the Ted Talks. These can be served as something to begin with.

Rewards and Appreciation

Rewards can add a motivational factor for employees to learn and evolve themselves. They should be appreciated and rewarded for their good work.  Employers can start ‘gamifying’ learning with the use of leader boards and rankings. Badges and certificates can be provided to the employee having the highest rank. An educational website can also be created to showcase the winners and best rankers. This will provide motivation for employees to learn more and work on self-improvement. This will lead to greater efficiency in the organisations’ activities.

In order to prepare the employees for an uncertain and ever-changing future, organisations should develop a system promoting continuous learning and self-improvement. The training should be provided not only regarding the skills needed for the company, but also for the skills that may benefit the employees in their future endeavours as well.
